THE TRAIN STOPPED EARLY that day, and after Zamora had cooked for the crew, avoiding the men’s attempts to get close to her, she looked for the Krisovas’ goat, Ruzal.

“Grandmother, Ruzal’s wandered off. I’ll have to go find her.”

“Don’t get lost.”

“Oh, she couldn’t have gone far. Probably wandered down to the river.”

She made her way to the river and found the goat eating the vegetation beside the small stream. She took off her shoes and waded into the water, holding her skirt high. The train was out of sight, and she longed to take a bath but dared not. She came out finally and sat down while the goat ate. The silence sank into her.

She began to sing an old song her grandmother had taught her. The land made her lonely. There was nothing here. It was flat, and it was truth she had spoken to Evan Morgan. She did miss the band. Back in the old country when she was a very young girl, there had been singing every night. Most of the men played instruments, and life had been good. But it had become hard for Gypsies when the government cracked down on them, and they had to flee to the New World.

“You can’t be this careless when we get into Kiowa territory, Zamora.”

Zamora leaped to her feet and whirled to see Tremayne. He had a rifle in his hand, and when he stood before her, she had to look up at him. “You followed me!”

“Why, not really. I always look about at night. Not like there’d be any danger here from Indians, but a man can’t get careless in this country.”

Zamora was angry and suspicious of him, “Don’t sneak up on me, Tremayne.”

“Zamora, not every man you see is out to get you.”

“Most of them are.”

He held the rifle across his arm. “Zamora, I’ve got enough on my mind just getting this train to Oregon. You’re safe enough with me.”

“Maybe so, but I had to learn about men the hard way. They all think that a Gypsy girl is easy prey.”

“That’s too bad. It must be hard.”

“It is hard. Hard being a Gypsy in the first place. Nobody likes us. They think we’re all thieves.”

Tremayne listened as she continued to speak. He was impressed by the girl’s beauty as was every man in the train, and he was seeing a side of her he had never seen before.

“I wish I had a way to make it easy for you. All I can say now is that none of the crew will bother you.”

Zamora was curious about the man. She felt safe with him, which was unusual for her. At the same time a thought came to her, He’s never tried to touch me, and he doesn’t watch me in the sneaky way that most men do. I’ll bet I can make him want me.

She stepped closer and had to look up because he was so tall. She took his arm and said, “I appreciate your taking us on the train.
